Biographical notes: From censuses, in appears Porte was born in Calcutta, India, and came to Nantucket as a mariner. He appears in the 1850 censes, at age 37 and newly married to Christina Pompey, a widow. By 1860, William was working as a cook on the steamsboat; they had nine children whom they raised in the house at 5 Atlantic Avenue.
