Biographical notes: Eunice Ross played a significant role in the integration of the Nantucket public schools. In 1840, Ross passed the entrance exam for the Nantucket high school. When she was barred from attending because of her race, there was a boycott and public debate; in 1845 Ross wrote a lengthy petition to the Massachusetts legislature.
