Biographical notes: Hiram Reed was freed from slavery in Missouri by the Union Army and sent to Nantucket, where he enlisted in the Union Army and served in the Civil War. At the end of his service, he returned to Nantucket, married a local woman named Isabella Draper, and lived out the rest of his long life on the island.
